FOUR-DAY FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPIC ASSESSMENT OF SWALLOWING PATIENT CLINICAL COMPETENCY
3.0 ASHA CEUs
INTERMEDIATE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL
This is a four-day FEES clinical competency training conducted at your location.
Prerequisite: Clinicians must attend the DVCT Zoom Course: Introduction to FEES, with Dr. Darla Freeman
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will identify a minimum of three ASHA guidelines for speech language pathologists performing endoscopic procedures.
Participants will identify a minimum of three contraindications for safety when performing a Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing procedure (FEES).
Participants will identify a minimum of two differences between a modified barium swallow and a FEES procedure. This information is essential when the speech language pathologist needs to identify the appropriate procedure, whether fluoroscopy or nasoendoscopy.
Under supervision, participants will conduct a minimum of twenty-five normal passes with the nasoendoscopy scope, safely on volunteers. Speech language pathologists will gain technical experience that will be applied to patient anatomy.
Participants will identify CPT codes for FEES procedures.
Participants will explain the risks, indications, and contraindications of a FEES procedure.
Participants will identify bolus preparation of liquids and solids. These options are needed by the speech language pathologist when preparing for the patient’s FEES procedure.
Participants will identify two compensatory strategy maneuvers. The compensatory strategies will be demonstrated on participants. Strategies are required for patients, and the speech language pathologist will identify the appropriate maneuvers to incorporate as needed.
Participants will describe a minimum of ten medical terms for clinical documentation.
